If you are in an enclosed space like a park or a zoo animal that might be enough for a 200mm, but it would be happier with more if you can afford.

If in the sticks, at least 300 mm, but if you are more able, ie., 500mm, go ahead.

The zoom lenses are used to "closer" to a topic, without having to physically close to a topic. Its pretty basic.
The more the need to raise the goal to stand.

I would stay away from larger, if you are really interested in an exceptional image quality and 1:1 extension for insects.

Micro Nikkor 105mm is an example of what I recommend. Canon has a similar goal.

For birds, I recommend Nikon 300mm f / 4 Here, too, stay away from larger, if you want an excellent picture quality. Canon has a similar goal.

I long for a 300-mm lens for a few years
all good, if they are available DSLR: Canon, Nikon, Olympus,

For insects, you must use a macro lens and a zoom of about 300 for birds.

It would be better with a macro lens for insects.
